ACWS DIVING
| | The Creation of the Center for Sports Parenting
By Institute for International Sport Executive Director, Dan Doyle
Two Institute programs, the World Scholar-Athlete Games and
National Sportsmanship Day bring us into direct contact with thousands of
parents, many of whom have asked us questions related to various sports
parenting issues. Due to this interest, I arranged to meet with Rick Wolff, a
nationally known sports psychologist and author of "Coaching Kids for
Dummies." As Rick and I shared our experiences with sports parenting, it
became clear that a program that would provide information to sports parents by
utilizing the expertise of sports psychologists, nutritionists, coaches,
educators, and sports medicine physicians would be a most valuable resource.
We decided to name the program, "The Center for Sports
Parenting," and Rick agreed to chair the initiative. With the assistance of
program director David Brennan, we have planned the various elements of the
Center and have enlisted 20 nationally respected individuals' from the fields
mentioned above.
The programs of the The Center for Sports Parenting are
as follows:
 |
Email program: The CSP has assembled a Sports-Parenting Panel of
Experts, consisting of some of the most respected figures in sports studies,
sports psychology, coaching, health, nutrition and sports medicine. Website
users can email a specific Sports-Parenting related question to the CSP
panel, and will receive a response, typically within seven days. This will
allow parents and educators timely, personalized answers to the most
pressing questions that they face in raising or teaching a young athlete.
Additionally, questions and answers will be archived on the CSP website for
access by other parents and educators. |
 |
Monthly on-line chat room: The CSP will host a monthly live chat,
offering parents and educators a chance to communicate real-time with
well-known and respected figures in athletics and with our CSP experts.
Users will have the opportunity to send personalized questions to the chat
guests, and will be able to view responses to their own and other questions
online. |
 |
Message Board: There will also be an interactive message board for
site users to communicate with each other for advice and recommendations on
specific Sports-Parenting topics. |
 |
Monthly articles published on our website: Each month, the CSP will
feature three articles discussing important issues for parents. |
 |
Hot Topic Polls: These polls will focus on some of the latest
topics in sports parenting, giving our users instant returns. |
 |
Research: The CSP is committed to researching the latest trends in
coaching, training methods, sports psychology, and nutrition and, based on
the results of this research, offering appropriate advice to sports parents. |
